Ancillary services are the suite of energy products that the transmission system operator (National Grid) buys from generators and flexible demand customers in order to control and balance the transmission system – second by second. The market for ancillary services is big – £1bn in 2014/15. Traditionally this market has been dominated by thermal generation and pumped hydro stations. However, the market is becoming more diverse with new products and providers being contracted to help National Grid confront the changing system operability challenges going forward.
